Half way to our goal of helping to pay Robert's Medical Bills
Our first tamale sale was a huge success, so far we have raised $3,000. We still need to raise $2k to reach our goal. Monday, April 28th Robert had his shoulder surgery. Now begins a long process of healing and recovery.Originally posted April 15th 2008:
Late Friday Night one of our volunteers was riding home when struck by a likely drunk driver who then fled the scene.
Robert's upsetting collision hits very close to home. He is one of the core volunteers and youth instructors here at bici centro, the artist of our interior artwork and a close friend. He is also a League Certified Cycling Instructor and an extremely thoughful cyclist on the road. Despite front and rear lights (multiple rear blinkies) a helmet and assertive lane positioning, he was struck from the rear. The driver fled the scene after Robert was struck. Robert sufferd a mild concussion, split helmet, some road rash, and painfully separated shoulder joint. So far we have no information from the police about the investigation toward the assailant.
To add insult to injury, his bike, certainly damaged, was apparently stolen from the scene while he was at the hospital. This might even prevent the hit and run case from going forward as this is the key evidence.
We will be hosting a second fundraiser Saturday afternoon on the 17th at Bici Centro to help cover Robert's medical costs. Robert is unable to work his primary job until his shoulder separation heals which can take upwards of three months. It will be at 1pm at Bici Centro. Please send your kind thoughts, notes, and perhaps even home cooked meals to Robert while he recovers, as he won't be able to do very much upper body movement for a while. I'm checking in on him and helping out, so please contact me at edfrance@Bicicentro.org if you'd like to do something thoughtful for our injured cycling compatriot.
