Introductions
Name and favorite event in the past 12 months
Varied responses, including CycleMAYnia events, such as the Fashion Show, Bike
Moves, Bike from Work Day and Film Fest, and non CycleMAYnia events such as races,
Bicycle Film Festival, education, SB Century, BMX at the Mercury Lounge, 24 Hours of
Halloween, etc.
What existing events can SB Bicycle Coalition and CycleM AYnia promote?
• Thursday night ride – Mountain Drive to Paradise Café ~18miles (Jim B.)
• Turtle Riders – 12 to 20 mile rides (Jim B.)
• Midnight Full Moon Rides – ride to the top of Gibraltar (Jim C.)
• Kalyra Winery Cyclocross Race – Oct. 30, Solvang (Mike H.)
• Dirt Club Cyclocross – Nov. 20, ridesb.com (Mike H.)
• SBMTV Trail Maintenance – ride and maintain local trails, every 1st Sunday (Chris O.)
• Ventura Art Ride (?) – Ride to art spots in Ventura (Michael K. and Melissa D.)
• Sycamore Canyon (Ventura) Ride – 13 miles led by Michael Kwan (Michael K.)
• Goleta Valley Cycling Club (GVCC) Newcomers Ride – monthly
• Cycle Chic Sundays – every 2nd Sunday, WheelHouse 2PM (Christa C.J.)
• Take Your Kid Mtn Biking Day – May 1 (Mike H.)
• Tour of California – May 21st
• Bike Fest – June in Santa Ynez
What can the events committee do better?
• Reach out to road cyclists (Karl S.)
• Reach out to UCSB (Michael K.)
• Have a calendar with all the events listed. Jim Cadenhead volunteered to host and
administer that site but said he will need help from other administrators too. Consensus
was that having the calendar managed by someone besides the Bike Coalition would be
a good idea as it would reduce liability for the organization and enable a more freeform
calendar of events. If possible, “ push” technology should be used so that the calendars
can be featured on other websites.
• Hold a Criterion.
Suggested planners:
o Mondo Requejo, Carson Blume, Mike Hecker (suggested by Mike H.)
o Offered to help: Jim Cadenhead (Jim C)
o Invite or consult with: Chris Hahn (Platinum member interested in involving roadies
in local bike culture), Nathan Pfaff (UCSB Cycling), and Frazer Hazlett (Lori L.)
o Involve Mom’ s in Motion (Melissa D.)
o Host at Earl Warren fairgrounds as a loop instead of downtown (Karl S.)
Foster a Ciclovia
o Possibly on Milpas rather than State St.
o Involve the Milpas Street/Area Beautification group (?) (Melissa D.)
o Don’ t have it in May, so many other events for CM already happening
o Involve UCSB and SBCC interns
o Interested leaders: Melissa Davis, Mike Vergeer, Christa Clark Jones, Jim
Cadenhead.
CycleM AYnia 2011 Suggestions
• Consider grouping more events together at the same event on the same day, to pool
resources
• Change last year’ s term “ Signature Event” to “ Anchor Event”
• Don’ t give smaller events that occur regularly or could occur independently the same
CycleMAYnia branding as the larger “ Anchor Events”
• Combine events together, such as with the Fashion Show and Bike Moves or the
Bachelors on Bikes and the Film Fest. Perhaps the Criterion could be combined with the
bike swap.
• Tie CM events into other community events
o 1st Thursday
o High School State Championships in mtn biking in May
o Tie Bike from Work Day to Farmers Market more (if it’ s at Tuesday FM again)
What events are a must have for CycleM AYnia 2011? (Anchor Events)
• Fashion Show, including Bike Moves ride
• Bike Challenge
• Crit or other racing event
• Bike from Work Day
• Gran Reventon or similar Spanish outreach event
• Bike to School Day
o Bike Train
o Use the Green Short video on biking to school as a commercial
o Get the SBHS Bike Polo club to lead something
o Involve a bike train (like the WheelHouse wants to start)
o Connect it to a kids or family weekend of bike activities
• Bike Swap and Show
• We need to make sure these Anchor events achieve our primary goals for CycleMAYnia.
Things we didn’t get to the meeting
• We need to re-state our mission.
• How to we bring people to our anchor events?
Add to the events committee contact list to be invited to next meeting
Ed Brown (of Open Air Bicycles)
Next Meeting:
Sub-committees should be meet for some of the larger events, such as the criterion, bike
swap, Ciclovia and youth oriented events. These groups should meet prior to the next
Bike Events Gathering and report back to the larger group.
Make sure the Anchor events support our overall goals for CycleMAYnia.
Please email Kent Epperson at kepperson@sbcag.org with details about your bike events
for the time being. These will be posted to a bike events calendar to be administered by
Jim C. Also send other contacts we should include in our emails for future meetings.
Talk about the smaller events and how those can be supported, funded and marketed.
The next meeting is scheduled for M onday, November 29 (last Monday of the month)
from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A larger venue will be chosen that can accommodate the large
attendance.
