Our Grand Opening was a huge success! While our six workstations we packed through the day, our bbq, reception and concert helped us introduce more then 150 people to our space. Thanks to our primary event sponsor, New Belguim Brewery, and to Del Pueblo Cafe, our event raised enough funding to pay April's Rent. What is the Bici Centro?

Bici Centro is a low to no cost bike program where community members learn to work on bikes in a multi-lingual, comfortable and fun setting. We help participants of all ages learn to rebuild good, used bikes and we maintain an inventory of used bike parts taken from otherwise broken bicycles. Bici Cento empowers its members by teaching bicycle repair, craft and creativity, as well as an appreciation of the independence and self-sufficiency the bicycle provides them.

Who are we?
We are a group of volunteers who believe in the power of bicycles to engage people of all ages through sport and creativity. We currently operate without paid staff.

We are a fiscally sponsored program of the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition. The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition is a countywide advocacy and resource organization that promotes bicycling for safe transportation and recreation. We see ourselves as a good fit and also continue to collaborate with many other groups.

We are forming powerful partnerships with important community groups and institutions, such as La Casa de la Raza and the Fund for Santa Barbara. These partnerships will allow our shop to grow and to help spread our work throughout the community.

What do we do?

  • Sponsor Open Shop- Community members are given advice and access to tools in order to complete their own bike repairs.
  • Bike Recycling- We refurbish 'junk' bikes destined to collect dust in garages or to end up in the waste stream. These bikes are either refurbished and sold by volunteers or bought to be refurbished on site by customers. By recycling bicycles into quality refurbished commuter bikes, Bici Centro raises funds to help self- sustain our non-profit work
  • Youth Earn-A-Bike (EAB) - many Santa Barbara youth do not bike ride because of lack of enjoyment or because they simply do not own a bike. At the same time, without constructive opportunities for our youth increasingly they engage in drug use, graffiti, and gang violence. EAB will consists of:

            • Building to Earn a Bike
            • Learning Street Safety Skills
            • Helping teach each other and help the shop
